I was introduced to prayer beads by a dear friend many years ago. She gifted to me a set of Anglican prayer beads made by a kid at a weekend Episcopalian retreat. The “weeks” were made of clear plastic beads separated by larger soccer ball beads on elastic string, I used them lovingly. They were always in my purse… I used them at home or in Quaker Meetings alike.
Silent, focused meditation does not come easy to me and my busy mind… always jumping from one line of thought to another, and yet I am a true believer that in sacred silence I can hear the small voice of The Divine guiding me, loving me, celebrating me. Gone are those first set of plastic beads… I have used many sets of Meditation Beads since. They have allowed me a deeper, clearer connection to the God of my understanding… I hope they do the same for you. Get your own set of meditation beads now at the JJCreates Shop >>
Prayer Beads Through The Ages
Beads are among the earliest human ornaments. Ostrich shell beads in Africa date back to 10,000 BC. Over the centuries various cultures have made beads from a variety of materials from stone and shells to clay. The English word bead derives from the Old English noun bede which means a prayer.
The exact origins of prayer beads remain uncertain, but their earliest use probably traces to Hindu prayers in India. Buddhism probably borrowed the concept from Hinduism. The statue of a holy Hindu man with beads dates to the 3rd century BC. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prayer_beads)
I make prayer beads in connection to the Lunar Cycle. Each section has 7 beads; the entire string is broken into 4 parts or weeks. Begin at the invitatory charms with an opening prayer and then continue around the circle. Each bead can simply be an opportunity to focus on something you are grateful for. These meditation beads are designed to be an easy way to support you in your connection to The Great Creator. Use them in whatever way works best for you.
Mediation Beads Example
Invitatory: Great Creator I am thankful for all the blessings in my life.
Week Marker: I am open to receiving all the abundance that flows in the Universe.
Week Beads: I am grateful for: ______________
